Constructed between 1892 and 1894 at 1307 New Hampshire Ave., the Heurich mansion (below), also known as the “Brewmaster’s Castle,” was built by Christian Heurich, the city’s most successful brewer. Architect John Granville Meyers designed the house in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Heurich chose Meyers because the architect was well versed in poured concrete, fireproof construction. (Heurich was leery of fire ever since his first brewery, at 1229 20th St., was damaged by fire.) Upon her death in 1955, Heurich’s third wife bequeathed the house to the Columbia Historical Society. The Heurich family repurchased the house in 2003 and opened it to the public. With its carved mahogany and oak woodwork and elaborate original period furnishings, it is considered the most intact late-Victorian house museum in the city.

Fire Fact | February 17, 1879

Truck Company B was placed into service at 1181 New Hampshire Ave NW.

FIRE ALARM BOXES such as this one (originally painted red) were installed in the District after the Civil War. Telegraphs transmitted the box number (on round topper sign shown above) to a fire alarm center. This system was used until the 1970s when the boxes were converted to a telephone system. By the 1990s, the callbox system had been replaced by the 911 system and was abandoned.

Typical Truck Company of the era.
